How and why did you choose to study at Pratt? Selected Students and Alumni respond: |
Darlene Bucher, MFA Student
I was most impressed with the way I was treated by people in the department
during my application process. From the very beginning, I felt that Rick (Former Department Chair, Rick Barry) and
Jill (Assistant to the Chair, Jill Song) and even the Grad Assistants wanted me to be a part of the program. Like
many older students returning to college, I had a million questions. Rick ALWAYS
responded to my questions and concerns. This was before I was even accepted into
the program. He answered every email and returned my phone calls. This was refreshing
to me because other grad schools that I interviewed with were not as responsive
and often failed to address my questions and concerns about their programs.
In general, I felt like I had an advocate with Rick. I knew that if the director
of the department was interested in my success in a program, that this would reflect
the same for the professors and staff. And in many ways, I was right!

While searching for a graduate program that would accommodate my professional
interests in NYC area, Digital Arts at Pratt was mentioned in various Interactive
Media-related publications and by people who were involved in the industry. I
learned that this program is internationally recognized for encouraging students
to create new forms of communication.x
I was thrilled to find an Interactive Media program with an emphasis on the developing
of artistic skills through the use of digital technology. Both Digital Arts students
and faculty possess diverse cultural and academic backgrounds. I believe that
diversity is a fundamental element in the process of creating innovative and revolutionary
art. The Digital Arts graduate program at Pratt is a convergence point for many
individuals with diverse backgrounds seeking to learn from and contribute to a
dynamic environment. The curriculum offers a variety of courses with both technical
and conceptual content, promoting the development of technical and creative skills
in a highly sensible design environment.

When I came to visit the department, a thesis student named Michael Dicomo gave me a tour of the labs. He asked what my background was, and when I said architecture and civil engineering, he nodded as if that was pretty typical. That gave me a sense of belonging that I did not get when I visited other schools. Also, he was an outstanding student and spoke with me about his thesis when I asked. As a representative of the department, he gave me the impression that Wow, everyone here must be really talented.
I think most alumni would say a huge amount of what they learned, not to mention
their most cherished memories, came from their classmates.

I chose Digital Arts at Pratt because of its reputation. However, before I applied
to the MFA program, I looked up all of the professors who teach in the department
and tried to learn as much as possible about their past experiences, their professional
interests, publications, etc. In the end I chose Pratt's program based on its
faculty.

The Department of Digital Arts program is a small, personal and open-minded environment in which professors and students directly interact with each other and create a positive network for sharing ideas, knowledge and experience. My experience here has been a direct reinforcement of the initial impression I got at the first open house I attended before my acceptance: Students and teachers know what you're up to and actually care to hear how things are going. Students of all different levels and backgrounds work along side each other and bounce ideas back and forth. People are excited about the field. The environment is open, flexible and most importantly personal. I can't say that I saw these qualities in any of the other programs I looked into... I might have been here an hour by the time I knew this was the place for me. You can just feel it when you're here. People care... about each other, their work and the work of others. You can't ask for much more than that.
